1. What is a handpan?

The handpan is an acoustic musical instrument that emerged in the early 2000s. It consists of two convex metal half-shells joined to form a flattened sphere, about 50 to 60 cm in diameter. On the upper side, there are several precisely tuned zones that produce distinct notes when struck with the fingers.

What sets the handpan apart from other percussion instruments is its exceptional harmonic resonance. Each note does not produce a dry sound: it unfolds in fundamental, octave, and fifth, creating a rich harmonic tapestry that naturally reverberates. This sonic quality, somewhere between a harp and a drum, explains why the handpan has become one of the most sought-after instruments worldwide in two decades for musicians seeking meditative sounds.

2. History and origin of the handpan

The first instrument of this family, the Hang, was created in 2000 by a Swiss workshop. Inspired by several traditional instruments — the Trinidadian steelpan, the Indian ghatam, the gong, and the bell — it was designed as a contemporary answer to an ancient musical quest: to produce deep, soft, and resonant sounds accessible to everyone.

The success of the Hang was immediate and international, but its rarity soon triggered the emergence of a new generation of instruments built on the same principle: these are handpans, a generic term that today refers to all tuned shell instruments made by independent workshops around the world.

Today, the handpan is played in very diverse contexts: individual meditative practice, yoga and sophrology sessions, intimate concerts, film music, sound healing sessions. Its popularity is steadily growing, driven by its sonic beauty and the calming experience it offers to both player and listener.

3. Anatomy of a handpan: How it works

Understanding the structure of a handpan will help you choose your instrument better.

The upper shell (Ding) has a central note called the Ding — usually the fundamental note of the scale. Around this Ding, 7 to 9 tuned zones are arranged in a circle, known as tone fields. Each tone field is a precisely hammered metal dome that vibrates at an exact frequency. The shape, thickness, and tension of the metal determine the tone and harmonic richness.

The lower shell (Gu) has a central hole called the Gu. This hole acts as a resonator, amplifying the bass and giving the handpan its characteristic depth of sound. The lower shell can itself contain additional notes on advanced models (called bottom notes).
